“Buddhism is not a religion. It is the philosophy of life of Sinhala-Buddhists” says Hon Mahinda Amaraweera

Hon Minister expressed these views opening the Vesak Pandal on 10th May which was created by the Businessmen’s Association of the Peliyagoda fish market.

The pandal is of 65ft height and 55ft width and it depicts the Jathaka story of SudhaBojana. It is lighted by 40 000 bulbs. The pandal will be open for public for 10 days from 10th May onwards.

“ Not only the Buddhists, devotees of other religions also hold Vesak festival in high regard. Thus, Vesak is a ceremony that reflects religious co-existence in Sri Lanka. Today temples are filled with devotees and there are almsgivings in almost every road. I believe there is no other religious festival like Vesak, where such meritorious deeds are practiced collectively. The real meaning of Vesak is to inculcate wholesome ideas within ourselves such as simplicity, generosity and letting of excessive attachments to worldly things” also mentioned Hon Minister.
