Drying up reservoirs due to the severe drought have caused devastating impacts to the inland fisheries, says hon Mahinda Amaraweera

Prevailing droughts in many districts have affected severely on the inland fisheries industry since the fish density is rapidly depleting in the drying up reservoirs. Fish fingerlings will be released to these reservoirs as soon as the drought is over, says Hon Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

Many Drought-stricken districts were the areas in which inland fishers industry was successfully operated. Hon Minister also mentioned that in line with the releasing of fish fingerling to the reservoirs, measures will be taken and financial and technical aid will be given to familiarize the fishermen for cage and pen cultivations.

Unlike in any other dry season ever, reservoirs in this drought have been affected massively leading certain reservoirs to dry up completely. In these circumstances, inland fishermen have lost their daily income and therefore actions will be taken to grant them government reliefs, said Hon Minister.

These views were expressed at a meeting held in the Fisheries Ministry on 02nd August with the participation of Hon Minister, Secretary to the Ministry and the fishermen representatives.

Government has utilized a significant sum during the past two years for the fisheries development. The monthly income of the inland fishermen has boosted due to the livelihood development programmes implemented in line with releasing of fish fingerlings to the reservoirs and awareness raising programmes on proper harvesting methods, said Hon Minister.

Due to the unavailability of newly established hatcheries until recent past, the annual amount of fish releasing was 20 million, which has now increased up to 80 million. New hatcheries are planned to be established to raise the amount up to 100 million by the year 2019, also mentioned Hon Minister.
