The government has decided to develop several fishery harbours as Green
Harbours out of the existing 20 fishery harbours of Sri Lanka. This is decided
to be implemented expeditiously since the existing harbours remain in the same
situation they were established decades ago and therefore they have become
unattractive and at the same time they fail in facilitating fishers with a
qualitative and efficient service.
Accordingly, the second phase of developing the Suduwella fishery
harbour in Matara as a Green Harbour amounting to a cost of 200 millions was
initiated under the guidance of Hon. Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources Development. This year, the government has allocated 250 millions for
the purpose of developing fishery harbours in Sri Lanka under the Green Harbour
All the selected Fishery harbours will be developed as fully facilitated
fishery harbours with infrastructure. Many countries in the world at present
adopt the Green Harbour Concept and measures have been taken to implement it in
Sri Lanka too.
