The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources Development has taken measures to introduce digital technology to the
20 main Fishery Harbours of the country. Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources Development, Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera had given instructions to the
Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation for the implementation of the programme and
consequently the first stage of this programme was inaugurated at Mirissa
Fishery Harbour at Matara District. Accordingly, 05 Fishery Harbours including
the Fishery Harbours of Mirissa, Suduwella and Dikkowita were added to the
chain of Fishery Harbours with Digital Technology.
The programme aims to receive information through satellite technology
about the fishers leaving the harbor for daily fishing and to check whether
they are accessing to a maritime boundary of another state. At the same time,
providing protection to the fishers at sea is also intended by this programme. In
discharging the functions of Fishery Harbours and their staff more
transparently and efficiently, the Digital Harbour Project would be of immense.
