sea has become vital. Thus the government has planned to familiarize SriLankan

Addressing the fishers’
request in this regard, a Life Saving Boat Service was initiated under the
guidance of the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Hon.
Mahinda Amaraweera with the cooperation of Mr. Ariyaseela Wickramanayake, the Chairman
of the SriLanka Life Saving Institute.
Accordingly, two emergency
contact numbers were announced to be contacted in case of SriLankan fishers are
involved in any kind of accident at sea.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, therefore
kindly informs the fisher community, in an emergency at sea, to contact Mr.
Ariyaseela Wickramanayake, the Chairman of the SriLanka Life Saving Institute on

boat named Tiny was added to this service which is provided on a
concessionary basis. Tiny is of
47 ft in length and 26 tons in weight and it costs Rs. 25 cores. Its staff,
including a doctor and nurses, consists of o6 members. The craft is fully-equipped to meet any type of emergency at sea. Several other government-sponsored
crafts have been planned to be assigned to boat service aiming the life safety
Even though the majority of the fisher community is economically
stabled, the government targets to develop the fisheries industry exempting the
conventional misconceptions prevail in the society regarding the fishers and
thereby establishing a modern fisher community.
