Construction of the maiden Marine Finfish Hatchery Centre in Sri Lanka
was inaugurated at Dharmapuram in Batticaloa under the patronage of Hon.
Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Mr. Mahinda
The Food and
Agricultural Organization and the European Union have supported Sri Lankan
Government in establishing the marine fin fish hatchery and a cost amounted to Rs
142 Million was borne in this regard. The project is being funded by the Food
and Agricultural Organization under its District cooperation programme.
Even though the Fresh water Hatcheries were
established in earlier times in interior part of the country, no marine finfish
hatcheries have been established prior to this. Researches conducted by NARA has clearly proved that the
marine species, sea weeds and Reef corals have been endangered by the destructive and unsustainable fishing
methods practiced by Indian and Sri Lankan Fishers on Sri Lankan waters.
Thus, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources Development has decided to establish marine fin fish hatcheries in
various parts of the country having comprehended the importance of breeding
marine fish and sea weeds.
