Although the life style of
the fisher community in North and East provinces have returned to normalcy with
the end of the terrorism, no infrastructure was developed for the fishers
dwelling from Puttalam to Jaffna which is essential in restarting their
livelihoods. Taking into consideration this issue, the fishing village of
Wellamankara in Mannar has already been targeted for development as a fully
fledged fishery harbour.
The proposed land for the fishery harbour is 06
hectares and the estimated cost is Rs. 1000 Million. It will provide facilities
to accommodate about 500 Multi day fishing vessels and 350 small fishing crafts
and it will also be equipped with a community Hall, Fuel storage centre, cold room, office facilities
and water and Electricity facilities.
The project is planned to be completed by the middle of next year,
having a feasibility report created taking practical knowledge and suggestions of
the fishers in to consideration.
