A meeting was held on 2023-06-08 at the Parliamentary Committee Meeting Hall under the auspices of the Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda and the Minister of Wildlife and Forest Conservation and with the participation of the officials from fisheries ministry,
Divisional Secretaries of Northern Province and Additional District Secretary of Kilinochchi, in connection with the release of lands acquired by the department of Wildlife and Forest Conservation. At the meeting both the ministers instructed the relevant officials to take necessary measures to release the lands where the people were residing and cultivating before 1985 and later on due to the war the people left these lands and these lands were separated as the lands belongs to Wildlife and Forest Conservation department, since the animal population and forestation increased in these lands, to area residents to settle and carry out cultivation and fishing.
It was stated that these lands have already been identified and they can be identified very clearly when they are mapped through G.P.S technology, and these activities will be carried out after forwarding this decision to the National Committee on Lands.
Further, it was stated that measures would be taken to appoint a committee consisting officials from relevant departments, in order to provide assistance for the reconstruction of Lakes and Lagoons belongs to Wildlife department.
At the meeting, discussions were focused especially on the failure to implement the development activities in Nandhikadal and Nayaru lakes and lagoons, although required projects have been prepared.
It was further discussed on the possibility to allow fishing activities at lakes belongs to Wildlife Zones at Lahugala and Panama in the District of Ampara.
Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries Mrs. Indu Rathnayake , the Secretary to the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation Mrs. R.M.C.M. Herath and a group of officials attended the event.
