Necessary arrangements are being made to obtain 1000 million rupees from the government to immediately repair the shortcomings in the fishery harbours from Kirinda to Panadura by the Minister of Fisheries after his observation tour made on 28.06.2024 to observe the fishery harbours in the South.
Accordingly, the Minister instructed the Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries, Mr. Nishantha Wickremasinghe to prepare a Cabinet Memorandum in this regard and submit it to the cabinet immediately.
The Minister had been informed about these shortcomings in his last visit as well as the previous visits made to the South by the Harbour Development Committee and the fisheries societies in the area. Accordingly he had collected information about those issues from the relevant officials and instructed the Chairman of the Fisheries Corporation, Mr. Nilanka Jayawardena to address these shortcomings by obtaining the necessary provisions expeditiously.
Fisheries Minister, Mr. Douglas Devananda further stated that he would prepare this Cabinet Memorandum as per the instructions that would be given by His Excellency, the President Ranil Wickemasinghe after being informed by him about the difficult situation faced by the fishermen due to these shortcomings in those harbours.
