On 01-08-2024 a special discussion was held at the Fisheries Minister’s Office in Jaffna under the auspices of the Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda to look into the progress and the shortcomings in sea cucumber farming since sea cucumber farming has become popular among the fishermen and investors in the Northern Province.
During the discussions, the sea cucumber farmers stated that most of the people in this area are interested in the culture of Sea Cucumbers since it has become one of the main foreign exchange earning sectors. They also said that the sea cucumber farmers requested to expand this culture in many other areas as well. By now many farmers hope to start sea cucumber culture in Kyts island in Jaffna and requested the minister to provide necessary assistance in this regard.
Expressing views the Minister stated that the fishermen in the North should show more interest in Sea Cucumber culture and the income of the sea cucumber farmers have been increased considerably. The Minister instructed the officials to take action to provide necessary assistance to the farmers not only in Kyts but also in the Northern province.
