Sri Lanka's fishing industry boasts a long-standing tradition that stretches back over 2,000 years.
Particularly following the country's independence from British rule in 1948, the marine fishing sector evolved from a livelihood activity into a significant large-scale industry.
Despite being a picturesque island surrounded by vast oceanic resources, the fishing sector's contribution to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) remains far from satisfactory.
Aligning with the government's vision under the "A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life" national policy, building a production-based economy is a critical and prioritized objective. Within this framework, special attention has been directed toward revitalizing the fishing industry. Upon assuming office, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake took immediate steps to restore the weakened fishing sector, demonstrating his strong commitment to the fishing communities.
Efforts are underway to establish an environment that enables small-scale fisher folk to engage sustainably in the industry by providing financial and technological support through government intervention. Plans are being put into action to ensure the fishing industry becomes a dynamic contributor to the nation's economic processes by enhancing production efficiency.
Measures must also be implemented to minimize post-harvest losses, preserve the quality of Sri Lankan fish harvests, and enhance international recognition for their value. This involves conducting fisheries research in both marine and freshwater sectors and establishing a systematic mechanism to ensure that the benefits of such research reach fishing communities effectively.
In line with the President’s vision for national rejuvenation, creating an environment where fishing communities can participate proudly and meaningfully in society remains a priority. I, along with the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic and Oceanic Resources and all affiliated institutions, am fully committed to implementing forward-thinking initiatives to achieve these goals.
