The discussions focused on promoting collaborative efforts in fisheries and introducing a training program for Sri Lankan fishermen on pole and line fishing methods, a sustainable fishing technique widely practiced in the Maldives. High Commissioner Masood Imad highlighted that the program would not only benefit Sri Lankan fishermen but also help address the shortage of fishermen in the Maldives. He also noted the significant contribution of the 17,000 Sri Lankans currently employed in various sectors in the Maldives, reflecting the strong ties between the two nations.

Minister Chandrashekar brought to the High Commissioner’s attention the recent detention of two Sri Lankan fishing boats that were not engaged in fishing while passing through Maldivian waters. He urged the Maldivian authorities to review such incidents with understanding and expressed his willingness to take any action against those involved in fishing or other unauthorized activities, the Minister said.

Dr. B.K. Kolita Kamal Jinadasa, Private Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries, also attended the meeting. This discussion reaffirmed the mutual commitment of Sri Lanka and the Maldives to work together for the sustainable development of the fisheries sector while fostering stronger bilateral relations.
