Mr. Suranga Prasath Hindalla Arachchi has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Ceylon Fisheries Corporation by the Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda with effect from 10-06-2024, for the vacancy created after the appointment of the former Managing Director Mr. Thushara Lokukumara as the Chairman of Ceylon Fisheries Corporation.
This quality control section was declared open on 26-01-2024 at Katunayake Airport premises, in order to fulfill the strong request of the exporters of Local fish products.
Under the patronage of Fisheries Minister Mr. Douglas Devananda, CM Blue Crabs Private Limited, a seafood production and export company, opened a crab packing factory in the Mannar region on January 16, 2024.
Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda made the above statement at a discussion held at Taj Samudra Hotel on 2023-12-08 when the Draft regulations pertaining to ILO C188 Work in Fishing Convention, 2007, developed with Technical support from the ILO and funding from DFAT and the government of Norway, were presented to the Hon. Douglas Devananda, the Minister of Fisheries, Hon. Manusha Nanayakkara, the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, Hon. Piyal Nishantha De Silva, the State Minister of Fisheries, His Excellency Paul Stephens, Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Mrs. Simrin Singh, the Director, ILO Country Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
Under the auspices of the Fisheries Minister, Mr. Douglas Devananda, 150,000 fish fry were released as the first phase on November 19, 2023, and 50,000 fish fry as the second phase on November 4, 2023, in the national festival of releasing fish fry, as part of the program to release two hundred thousand fish fry in the fresh water ponds in the Puthumurippu area in Kilinochchi Karachchi Divisional Secretariat.
The Japanese government agreed to provide a grant of 3 million US dollars for the development of the fisheries sector in the northern and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka in response to the request made by the Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Douglas Devananda, to support the growth of the fisheries sector in those regions from the Japanese ambassador to Sri Lanka, Mr. Misukoshi Hidayaki. Accordingly, the pertinent agreement was signed at the Ministry of Finance on November 22, 2023.
The first phase of the program for providing free petroleum to the owners of petroleum vessels, which was offered by the Republic of China as a grant for the benefit of the fishing community of Sri Lanka, took place on 23/05/2023 at the Panadura Fishery Harbour under the patronage of the Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Douglas Devananda, State Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Piyal Nishantha De Silva and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mr. QIZHENHONG.
General Secretary of the National Fisheries Federation, Nelson Edirisinghe says that more powers will be added to the National Fisheries Federation by the proposed new Fisheries Act to be presented to Parliament soon by the Minister of Fisheries and the responsibility of National Fisheries Federation and Rural Fisheries Societies will come under the Ministry.
A discussion between Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda and Indian Deputy High Commissioner Dr. Satyanjal Pandey was held on 23.09.2023 at the Fisheries Ministry Auditorium regarding the development of the fisheries sector between India and Sri Lanka.
