Weather 1200px 22 10 20 1000x600 1The Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Mr. Susantha Kahawatte, has stated that sea conditions around the island may become rough due to a low-pressure area located to the northeast of the country. He also emphasized that it is mandatory for all fishermen to wear life jackets.

According to reports issued by the Department of Meteorology this morning (13), there may be occasional showers and thunderstorms in the seas around the island, along with an expected increase in wind speed of 25–35 kilometers per hour. The Director General noted that sea areas from Puttalam to Chilaw, and from Galle and Matara to Hambantota, may experience rough conditions at times.

Commenting further on the situation, Mr. Susantha Kahawatte said:

"As per the current situation, we are not imposing a ban on fishing activities. However, small vessel owners operating in coastal waters are advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor weather updates. If the sea conditions become rough, they are strongly urged to return to shore immediately or refrain from setting out. In particular, we emphasize that wearing life jackets is mandatory throughout the entire period—from departing for fishing activities, during work at sea, and until safely returning to shore. Multi-day fishing vessels may continue to depart from and arrive at ports as usual."

The Fisheries Department has further urged the entire fishing community to closely follow weather forecasts issued periodically by the Department of Meteorology and the Department of Fisheries, and to take all necessary precautions to safeguard their lives and property.
