The second District Fisheries Coordination Committee meeting, convened to provide swift solutions to the occupation and infrastructure-related challenges faced by the fishing community in the Matara District, was held today (08) at the Matara District Secretariat under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Rathna Gamage
Extensive discussions were held regarding the delays in the construction of the Gandara Fisheries Harbour and the social and environmental concerns arising from the prolonged project. The Deputy Minister instructed relevant officials to take immediate legal and administrative action to remove dilapidated and abandoned vessels that have remained in the fisheries harbours of Gandara, Nilwella, Devinuwara, and Kottegoda for years, noting that they pose a significant environmental hazard. Attention was also focused on establishing a boat repair yard at the Devinuwara Fisheries Harbour and setting up a police post in the vicinity of the Gandara Harbour .
The Deputy Minister further emphasized the need to establish a formal mechanism that would enable the Ministry to directly intervene in emergencies involving deep-sea fishing vessels, including technical breakdowns, accidents, and medical emergencies affecting fishermen. In addition, decisions were taken to strengthen communication systems at fisheries harbours, address longstanding issues related to fishermen’s insurance and pension schemes, and further expand initiatives implemented through the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) to promote the freshwater and ornamental fish sectors.
Addressing the officials, the Deputy Minister stated:
"The current government has allocated substantial funding this year for the development of the fisheries sector. These resources must be utilized efficiently and without delay to improve the livelihoods and welfare of our fishing communities. The dedication and commitment of officials are crucial in achieving this objective. We cannot allow administrative obstacles to hinder the delivery of essential services and benefits to fishermen."
The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Energy Arkam Ilyas, Member of Parliament Ajantha Gammaddage, the Matara District Secretary, the Chairmen of the Dikwella and Devinuwara Pradeshiya Sabhas, and senior officials representing the Ministry, Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation, NARA, Cey-Nor, and NAQDA.
