DSC 1040A discussion was held on 2023-06-06 at the Ministry of Fisheries, in connection with the issues brought up during the recent tour of Minister Douglas Devananda to inspect Chilaw Lagoon.

A group of representatives from the Fishermen’s Association including the chairman attended the discussion.

At the discussion, the minister instructed the directress of the Aquatic Culture Development Authority, to take necessary measures to release baby prawns into lagoons and reservoirs, thereby removing the obstacles to carry out local prawn industry.

Prawn farmers pointed out that the Prawn farming industry in Chilaw is collapsed completely, due to a communicable disease to a prawn variety called “Vana Mee”. Accordingly, the Minister instructed to take measures to recommence the traditional prawn culture. The minister added that he would provide the Radio Transmission Station very soon and prompt measures will be taken to clean the lagoon.

In addition, the minister instructed the officials to take necessary actions to provide a filling station to Chilaw lagoon area and promptly provide solutions to many issues.

Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries Mrs. Indu Rathnayake, Director General of Fisheries Department Mr. Susantha Kahawaththa, Director General of Aquatic Culture Development Authority Mrs. Ashoka and a group of officials attended the discussion.
