National Fisheries Federation was founded in 2010 to with the view to facilitate sustainable development of fisher folk and the fisheries sector. To build up a proud fishing community economically and socially strong keeping pace with the modern world is the vision of the National Fisheries Federation.
State of the Fish Market Complex – Peliyagoda
The government of Sri Lanka decided to establish a state of the art Central Fish Market Complex as per budget proposal 2006. The new fish market replaced the old St. Johns fish market. The objectives of establishing a new fish market complex are as follows;
- Ensure the hygiene and quality of fish and supply fish at a reasonable price.
- Fish supply in compliance with relevant standards
- Provide adequate space and facilities for the consumers and sellers.
- Ease traffic congestion in Colombo
The Government of Sri Lanka and the Asian Development Bank funded the project. This state of the art fish market at Peliyagoda was established on a 3.17 ha land. The market consists of 148 wholesale stalls, 128 retail stalls and an ice plant with a capacity of 25Mt, 03 cold rooms, banking facilities, Post office, Police check point as well as Quality Control laboratory. In addition, the new fish market complex has a parking facility to accommodate about 500 vehicles.
