Current Activities and Food Security
The Chairman of the Lanka Fisheries Corporation, J.A.K. Mark, while participating in the event, stated that the objective of the Corporation is to provide processed fish to the public at an easily accessible price, and accordingly, it is “vacuum packed” in 300g and 400g packets and distributed islandwide through Sathosa.
CeyFish Outlet Network and Food Security
The Fisheries Corporation has regional offices under 20 main administrative districts, and 90 outlets are operating under them. The Chairman pointed out that the Wadduwa outlet opened today is the 91st CeyFish outlet, and 9 more outlets are scheduled to be opened in the future.
The main objective of the Corporation is to provide a fair price to the fisherman, transport fish in the most hygienic way, take it to the interior of the country and distribute it to every citizen at a reasonable price. Mr. Mark emphasized that this provides a great boost to the food security policy of the government. He also mentioned that protein-rich fish food is important as a nutritious food for young children suffering from malnutrition and pregnant mothers. He further said that the 300g and 400g packets provided by the Corporation will provide convenience to the consumer's pocket.
Quality and Institutional Strength
Mr. Mark asserted that the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation strictly controls the quality of the fish supplied through all its outlets. Citing the Chinese proverb, “Good things are not cheap, cheap things are not good,” he explained that the corporation never supplies low-quality fish and that all the fish is fresh and of the best quality. He added that the fish is supplied to major institutions such as hospitals, the Ports Authority, prisons and the Navy, which clearly shows the confidence they have in the quality of the corporation’s fish products.
