A special discussion was held between the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Mr. Ramalingam Chandrasekhar, and His Excellency the President regarding the serious problems faced by the fishing sector in this country, in view of the increase in fuel prices in the world market and the crisis situation regarding fuel supply due to the military unrest in the Middle East region.
With the aim of quickly restoring the fishing industry and minimizing the economic pressure faced by the fishing community, special attention was paid during this discussion to providing a special allowance to them. Accordingly, the Minister stated that the final decision regarding the provision of the relevant allowance is scheduled to be taken at the Cabinet meeting to be held today (06).
Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekhar, who further expressed his views, said that even in the face of global political crises, it is the government's primary responsibility to protect the fishing community, which makes a significant contribution to the national economy and food security. The Minister also emphasized that the government is fully committed to removing the obstacles that have arisen in the fishermen's ability to go to sea due to the increase in fuel prices, and to continue their livelihood and to activate the fishing industry.
The government expects that the implementation of this decision will enable immediate relief for the affected fishing community and ensure that the country’s fish supply remains stable.
