A new insurance scheme aimed at covering the professional risks faced by fishing divers was recently launched in Kalpitiya (07) under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Rathna Gamage.
The initiative is in line with the government’s policy of "A Rich Country - A Beautiful Life" and seeks to provide financial security and protection to those engaged in this high-risk occupation.
The insurance scheme has been introduced by the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation. Its primary objective is to offer relief to divers in the event of occupational hazards and ensure economic stability for their families during unforeseen incidents.
The inaugural event was held at the Sea Green Hotel premises in Kurinnampitiya, Kalpitiya, with the participation of Puttalam District Parliamentarian Ajith Gihan and Gampaha District Parliamentarian Stephanie Fernando.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Minister Ratna Gamage highlighted that ensuring the safety and welfare of fishing divers—who have long lacked adequate insurance coverage—is a key responsibility of the government. He further noted the government’s continued commitment to minimizing occupational risks and fostering a safer working environment.
The event was attended by a large number of officials and members of the diving community, including Chairman of the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board Mr. Pemasiri Jasingarachchi, Director General Kelum Kaluarachchi, Deputy Director C. Kemaratne, and Chairman of the All Ceylon Divers National Center Mr. Jagath Preethikumara.
