WhatsApp Image 2023 11 07 at 09.18.13Mr. H.E MIZUKOSHI Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, met Mr. Douglas Devananda, Minister of Fisheries on 06.11.2023. At the request of His Excellency the President, the discussion was held about Rs.435 million which has been decided to be given by the Japanese government in order to develop fisheries sector in Sri Lanka.

This money will be used for the development of fisheries sector in Sri Lanka, and it will be used to provide necessary net gear to the fishermen, to develop cold storage facilities belonging to the Ceylon Fishery Corporation and Ceylon Fishery Harbour Corporation and to provide fuel subsidies for fishing vessels. 

Furthermore, the minister discussed with the Japanese ambassador about the program to provide boat engines with batteries instead of boats running on kerosene and said that he would be extremely grateful if the Japanese government would take steps to provide assistance to implement it.

Also, there was a long discussion about all possible ways for the development of the well-being of the fishermen and the fishing activities. 

A group of officials including the Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries, Mrs. Indu Ratnayake, and the Director General of the Fisheries Department, Mr. Susantha Kahawatta participated in this event.
