The State Minister stated that the leaders who came to power had deceived the fishing community giving false promises and stressed that they should no longer be deceived.

He stated that the fishing community too should have a programme which would be enabled to win their rights and preserve dignity without being deceived. However, preparation of such programme should not be carried out by a group of personnel who did not have proper understanding towards the industry. Hence, the minister pointed out that it was important to carry out the task by a group of personnel who had knowledge and passion towards the industry.

The minister made these comments at the discussion held yesterday (on the 30th) to formulate a National Fisheries programme. District representatives of National Fisheries General Federation and activists of the fisheries sector also participated at the occasion. At this juncture, officers and District representatives of National Fisheries General Federation pointed out that even 10years have passed after the establishment of National Fisheries General Federation, the entity had failed to reach its expected objectives as the fisheries sector governed by individuals who did not possess the knowledge on fisheries sector and the fishing community.

They also stated that the fishing community which was always deceived should not be deceived further and emphasized that its fullest support would be extended to implement such a programme.

They have also made a request to introduce this programme having being called an annual General meeting of the National Fisheries General Federation.

The state minister instructed the administrative secretary to take needy steps to fulfill the the request made by the fishing community and also stressed that the National Fisheries General Federation should plan to obtain views of fishery leaders and community for the proposed programme.
