Cheques worth rupees 160.5 crores are issued as the 4th round of compensation to the fishermen who were affected due to the sinking of X-Press Pearl Ship, at a function held on the 11th of May, 2023, at the Ministry of Fisheries under the auspices of the Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda with the participation of the State Minister of Fisheries Piyal Nishantha De Silva.
Prime mister Dinesh Gunawardena said there is a growing demand for fish products in Europe as well as in countries including Japan and the Sri Lankan fishing sector could cater to that demand by increasing fish production. He added that Cey-Nor Foundation, the largest boat builder in Sri Lanka, could make a significant contribution by expanding fiber boat production.
Ornamental fish farming industry and aquatic plants are considered to be of prime importance among the sources of foreign exchange avenues to Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Fisheries and National Aquaculture Development Authority are planning to increase the number of farmers who tend to take on this industry.
