A group of experts who work in the Fisheries sector in collaboration with the Indian Government visited Sri Lanka on the initiative taken by the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka. Accompanying the Indian Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Mr. Sathyanjal Pande, they met the Minister of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Fisheries Department, and the representatives of NARA and NAQDA Institutes on the 23rd of last month and discussed the matters pertaining to the development of fisheries sectors in Sri Lanka.
"It is a matter of happiness that the Ceylon Fishery Corporation which had been downcast due to inefficiency is getting updated to suit modernity. Fishery Corporation outlets with high quality are being established all over the country. We can change the bad image the fishermen and thre consumers had about the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation."
The Ministry of Fisheries and the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources are making arrangements to introduce a new Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act in accordance with the directives and guidance of His Excellency the President, Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Douglas Devananda, and State Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Piyal Nishantha, with the goal of developing the fisheries sector and the sustainable harvesting through the long-term conservation and the management of fisheries and aquatic resources by repealing the existing Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act No.02 of 1996.
