Bandaragama Milton Motors, which is a private company, started manufacturing fishing boats powered by electric cells many years ago, and this drew the attention of the Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Douglas Devananda.
As per the request of the combined Fisheries Associations of Chilaw area, Minister Douglas Devananda visited Chilaw Fisheries Office on 2023-05-13, in order to look into the issues of the fishermen in Chilaw area, and took immediate measures to solve 4 issues faced by the fishermen.

Cheques worth rupees 160.5 crores are issued as the 4th round of compensation to the fishermen who were affected due to the sinking of X-Press Pearl Ship, at a function held on the 11th of May, 2023, at the Ministry of Fisheries under the auspices of the Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda with the participation of the State Minister of Fisheries Piyal Nishantha De Silva.
