In view of the serious negative impacts on coastal ecosystems and the livelihoods of other fishing communities caused by the use of machinery in the seine fishing industry, the Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Mr. Susantha Kahawatte, has urged the fishing community to adhere strictly to traditional fishing practices in line with existing laws.

Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasekhar, visited the Colombo National Hospital today (04) to inquire into the condition of fishermen who were severely assaulted by an unidentified group in international waters and are currently receiving treatment for their injuries.
Sri Lanka is steadily moving away from a dark era where even freedom was negotiated and sold, towards a new dawn of genuine independence, Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar has stated.
